Islands of Brilliance is a pilot program developed for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Curriculum is individualized to foster each student’s creativity through the use of software & technology.
I will be joining the program as a volunteer. I've heard nothing but excellent things about the experiences that both the students and mentors are having in this amazing program. This is not only a great way to give back to young artists, but also an incredible learning lesson for me as an aspiring teacher and parent.
The Mentors' jobs are simple: get to know your student, define goals, and support them through a project. It sounds like every student's definition of success is a little different. Going into this I have no idea what to expect, but I know it's going to be a great feeling when things really start to click with the students. As a big brother of two special needs kids I have seen how important a teacher, aid, or mentor can be in their lives. Some of these kids really look forward to these projects all week, so I am humbled to be a part of the excitement. Party on!
